Lance Stroll: Why his Driving Style is Slow

Lance Stroll driving style

What is Lance Stroll’s driving style?

Lance Stroll has an Aggressive Oversteer driving style. He makes a lot of corrections on the steering and tends to be more aggressive than Alonso. His aggression has led to his poor performance in comparison to Fernando Alonso. The reason behind this is his tendency to be reactive to the car, rather than smooth and conservative. Stroll brakes hard and late into the corners, making corrections to the wheel, also being aggressive on exit. In comparison to Alonso, he is more on the oversteer side, liking to have the rears move around.

Before we can understand why Lance Stroll’s aggression led to him underperforming, we have to look into the telemetry data.

On entry, he brakes hard and late into the corner, similar to Alonso. Stroll gains time on entry compared to Alonso, being better on the brakes. However, he has to correct the car often, and compromises his mid-corner speed. Mid-corner, he tends to coast more, needing to balance the car platform before getting back on the throttle. Stroll is slower in the mid-corner, losing time to Alonso, who is more sensitive to the limit of the car. On exit, he is faster to full throttle, correcting the steering and dancing the car out of the corner, using the limit of the rear tyres.
